Many of the year’s end-of-year Oscar hopefuls received support from the American Film Institute, which included Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,” and Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up” among the year’s top ten films.
The yearly AFI list, which is determined through a jury process, can provide a reasonable approximation of Academy Award favorites and give new or upcoming films a boost. “CODA” by Sian Heder, “Dune” by Denis Villeneuve, “King Richard” by Reinaldo Marcus Greene, “Licorice Pizza” by Paul Thomas Anderson, “Nightmare Alley” by Guillermo del Toro, “tick, tick… BOOM!” by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth” by Joel Coen
Questlove’s music documentary “Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised),” Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical family drama “Belfast,” and the Netflix series sensation “Squid Game” will all receive special prizes from the AFI.
The winners will be honored at a reception on January 7 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.
